PEACH BLUEBERRY & AVOCADO SMOOTHIE

Peach Smoothie HOMEGROWN KITCHEN

We have a peach tree in the back yard which doesn’t look like much. It is hugging the side of a garden shed and often has leaf curl… but it produces the juiciest sweetest peaches. Here is a photo of our recent harvest. They have white, almost light-green flesh, which at first you think, ‘these can’t taste like much’, but they are quite something. We are not sure of the variety, as with most of our older fruit trees they were here when we moved in. My Nana thinks they are Wiggins, she probably knows…

Peach Blueberry & Avocado Smoothie

I make this smoothie most afternoons after Mika + Teo have woken from their synchronised naps - long may that last (as occasionally Mum gets a wee rest too!).

Ingredients

  • 1 or 2 juicy peaches or other stone fruit
  • handful of blueberries
  • half a ripe avocado
  • 1/2 teaspoon spirulina optional - gives an extra nutrient kick
  • 2 heaped tablespoons yogurt I add this after I have removed a glass for Teo as he is dairy intolerant
  • approx 1 cup water or milk of choice I generally use a combo of water plus coconut, rice, or almond milk depending what we have in the fridge

Instructions

  • Put all the ingredients into a blender* (start with 1/2 cup milk/ water) and whizz. Add extra milk/ water to reach a drinkable consistency. My kids like it thick-ish so they can eat some with a spoon.

Notes

We don't have a blender so instead of using the food processor which is a hassle to clean, I put everything into a large jug and use a handheld blender (soup wand) to whizz the smoothie. Works just fine.

They are mostly juice so we can’t really preserve them as we do with our excess fruit, they would just become a watery mass in the jar. So, we have to eat them when they are ripe… oh darn.

  1. Hi Nicola, those peaches look absolutely delicious. Neat idea about the avocado in smoothies instead of banana. I have been slipping a bit of spinach or other greens in to banana and berry smoothies for my son and some barley grass powder….he doesn’t even notice so a great way to get some extra greenery in! Also a few almonds sometimes.
I would LOVE to hear about the yogurt please!

Of-course a handful of nuts, forgot to add as an addition to the smoothie. Or a tsp of almond butter if we are so lucky to have it in the house. Nice to hear from you again.

  2. I love this smoothie. I make them often for breakfast but have never added avocado. I must try it. I do use avocado with cocoa as a frosting for cupcakes though. It’s the creaminess that works so well in sweeter dishes.

I agree Suzanne, avocado is fantastic as a creamy addition to a raw icing/ frosting and makes a kick-ass chocolate mousse. Enjoy 🙂
